AeroVironment Expands UGV Capabilities

AeroVironment has entered into an agreement to acquire Telerob Gesellschaft für Fernhantierungstechnik mbH, a provider of UGVs (unmanned ground vehicles) and ground robotic solutions to customers around the world.

Telerob’s turn-key UGV solutions include the telemax and tEODor EVO families. The rugged robotic systems are designed to safely and effectively perform a variety of dangerous homeland security, emergency response, and defense missions, including explosive ordinance disposal (EOD), hazardous materials handling (HAZMAT), and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threat assessment. The vehicles feature all-terrain capabilities, specialized precision manipulators, and autonomous functionality.

AeroVironment has also submitted a proposal in partnership with Telerob to the United States Air Force for its multi-year, EOD robotic system program. AeroVironment plans to pursue additional significant domestic UGV opportunities with the United States Navy, Marine Corps, Air National Guard, and numerous police forces. Specific international opportunities include UGVs for security at airports in a Middle Eastern allied nation and multiple UAS programs with the German Federal Ministry of Defense, which Telerob’s local presence supports.

Tethered Drone-Based LTE Network Deployed

COMSovereign’s Drone Aviation business unit has delivered its first fully-integrated LTE network, based on a new tethered drone-based aerial platform that will allow the customer to deploy a fully operational network without reliance on existing infrastructure.

The new network is based around Drone Aviation’s highly portable WATT 200 tethered drone and also features Virtual NetCom’s (VNC) FeatherLite airborne LTE communications package. FeatherLite leverages advanced network function virtualization to create a complete 3GPP standards-compliant airborne LTE network with a virtualized LTE EPC (Evolved Packet Core), eNodeB small cell base station, integrated specialized application software, and multiple backhaul solutions.

The WATT 200, combined with FeatherLite, can be quickly deployed to create a network “bubble” supporting connectivity within a range of the drone in response to emergencies and natural disasters, temporarily increase wireless coverage at special events, or to provide connectivity in areas without any existing infrastructure. It can also link into existing commercial networks through SATCOM, microwave backhaul, or wired infrastructure. The complete system is contained within two ruggedized suitcases for easy deployment nearly anywhere.
